aintAin’t Misbehavin’: Fats Waller Musical Show has been successfully cast. Unlike the Broadway version of five performers and a piano player, The Park Players will present an expanded version featuring 20 singers/dancers – oh yea – and a piano player. How were these talented individuals selected, you ask. In brief, here is the selection process. On a cold January night (or afternoon), the aspiring actors appeared at the North Rosedale Park Community House. After completing paperwork (previous experience, vocal range, availability) and having their photos taken (allowing the director to remember them later), each person was asked to sing a song, preferably from the show. In this specific audition, the director then requested the auditioners to sing a song as a lullaby, a seduction, and/or an operatic aria. Meanwhile, in another room, all of the participants were taught a brief set of movements. When called back, they were instructed to perform these newly-learned movements in a variety of styles and tempos. Next, the participants were asked to read brief scenes from the show. As this piece is mostly music, the “scenes” consisted largely of song lyrics. Auditioners were thanked and sent home to await the results.

The next step involved the Director taking time to cogitate and make her decisions. With this production, she then consulted with her two assistant directors prior to calls being made. Those who were cast were asked if they would accept their parts (happily they all did). Others were thanked for their participation and encouraged to come again.

The results of this procedure are our cast: Amber Powell, Antonio Ballard, Bria Warmsby, Carmen Cooper, Corey Quinn, Cynthia Sammy, Deirdre Scott, Gabrielle Dowdell, Gloria McNairy, Jeannette Steinhauer, Jessica Brown, Jonathan Jones, Kyle Sammy, Mark Steinhauer, Montellis Whitt, Norina David, Roger Loeb, Sadie Bernice, and Zania Sanyika.
